The Story Behind The Estuary
The idea for The Estuary was born out of a moment of deep reflection. As Emily Billington recalls, it came to her in a meditative state—a prompt she couldn’t ignore. The vision of an art show at this historic location quickly gained momentum, leading to the collaborative effort that has brought this event to life.
Thanks to dedicated local artists and organizers, The Estuary is set to become a landmark event, merging the creative soul of the community with its rich historical roots. The event’s logo, inspired by the stunning rosette stained-glass window of Bicentennial Hall, pays homage to the building’s unique architectural beauty and significance.
Why This Matters
Bicentennial Hall, originally built in 1882, is the oldest building in Fair Haven and is deeply connected to the town’s first African American community. It is also the only site in Fair Haven recognized by both the state and national historical registries. Originally located at 38 Fisk St., the building was moved to its current location on Cedar Avenue in 1974 to avoid demolition.

The restoration of Bicentennial Hall has been a long-term project, in the works for over five years. The Borough of Fair Haven hired a historical architect to assess and create a comprehensive restoration plan. This three-stage plan, with a budget exceeding one million dollars, includes:
- Structural Repairs – Fixing the roof, and foundation, and ensuring the building’s stability.
- Functional Upgrades – Improving lighting, and plumbing, and ensuring the space is usable for community events.
- Historical Authenticity – Restoring furniture and paint colors to match the building’s original chapel era.
Fair Haven’s Department of Public Works completed many of the initial repairs, while contractors handled specialized work such as plumbing, electrical updates, and hardwood floor installation.
